The Nutrition Facts That Make Kids and ADULTS Yell WHAT!?

After running hundreds of nutrition workshops with children and adults, there are a few moments I can almost guarantee will happen.
Someone's jaw drops.
A child looks at me in disbelief.
A parent starts laughing.
And somewhere in the room, someone says: "WAIT... WHAT?!"
Those moments are some of my favourites.
Not because the information is complicated.
But because nobody has ever explained the body to them this way before.
Curiosity Changes Everything
One of the biggest misconceptions about nutrition education is that children need more information.
In reality, they often need more curiosity.
When children become curious about how their bodies work, something powerful happens.
They start asking questions.
They start connecting the dots.
And often, they begin making healthier choices without being told what they "should" do.
That's why my workshops focus less on rules and more on understanding.
The Facts That Always Get A Reaction
Here are a few favourites:
Your Taste Buds Change
Many children are shocked to learn that their taste preferences can change over time.
Just because they didn't enjoy a food previously doesn't mean they'll dislike it forever.
It's one of the reasons I encourage children to keep exploring new foods without pressure.
Digestion Starts In Your Mouth
Most people assume digestion begins in the stomach. It doesn't.
Digestion starts the moment we begin chewing and mixing food with saliva.
Which means rushing meals can make the rest of the digestive system work much harder.
Hydration Affects More Than Thirst
One of the most memorable demonstrations in my workshops is explaining how the large intestine helps manage water balance.
When adults understand how hydration affects digestion, suddenly drinking water starts making a lot more sense.
Food And The Body Are Connected
Children are often fascinated when they realise the body isn't made up of separate parts working independently. Everything is connected.
What happens in one area often affects another.
And that's where learning becomes exciting.
Understanding Creates Better Choices
I've never been particularly interested in teaching people what to think.
I'm far more interested in helping them understand how their bodies work.
Because once they understand the "why", healthier choices often follow naturally.
Not because they're scared.
Not because they're forced.
But because they're curious.
And in my experience, curiosity is one of the most powerful learning tools we have.
