What a Cruise Buffet Can Teach Us About Hunger

One of my favourite questions to ask children during workshops is:
"Do you think I could fit all the food on a cruise ship into this stomach?"
I then hold up my fist and wait for the answers.
The giggles come every time.
And while we're laughing, we're also learning something important.
Because whether you're at home, at a birthday party, or standing in front of a cruise buffet with food everywhere...
Your body still has limits.
More Food Doesn't Mean We Need More Food
Cruises are famous for their food.
Buffets.
Desserts.
Snacks.
Restaurants.
Ice cream.
Food available almost around the clock.
It's easy to feel like you should make the most of it.
After all, it's there.
But something fascinating happens when we stop and listen to our bodies.
Our stomach doesn't suddenly double in size because we're on holidays.
Our hunger cues don't disappear because we're standing in front of a buffet.
Our bodies continue communicating with us the same way they always do.
The challenge is whether we're listening.
Your Body Is Always Talking
One of the things I teach in workshops is that our bodies are constantly providing feedback.
Hunger.
Fullness.
Energy.
Comfort.
Discomfort.
The signals are there. But modern life can be noisy.
Screens.
Schedules.
Distractions.
And yes... sometimes unlimited dessert.
When we're distracted, it's easy to miss those messages.
My Cruise Survival Strategy
People often assume nutritionists have some magical trick when it comes to holidays.
The truth is much less exciting.
I walk. A lot.
I drink water.
And I try to pay attention when my body says: "That's enough."
Do I get it right every time? Absolutely not.
But awareness is far more important than perfection.
The Goal Isn't Restriction
Holidays are meant to be enjoyed. Food is part of that enjoyment.
The goal isn't to avoid the buffet or say no to dessert.
The goal is to enjoy the experience while staying connected to your body's signals.
Because even on a cruise ship surrounded by food...
Your body still knows what it needs.
Sometimes we just need to remember to listen.
